Durban – The Democratic Alliance would write to the Public Protector and to the IEC to ask them to investigate allegations the ANC administration in Pietermaritzburg cut off the water supply on purpose so they could roll out water tankers feigning being a responsive government delivering services, the party said on Sunday.
“This abusive conduct manipulates the most vulnerable people in South Africa. Again, the ANC has been revealed as an organisation that governs like black lives do not matter,” DA KwaZulu-Natal leader, Zwakele Mncwango, said in a statement.
“This is also flagrant abuse of the constitutionally guaranteed right to access to water and we contend that this amounts to a gross abuse of state resources.”
Capturing state resources
The DA was responding to a story in the Sunday Times which reported that a memo, allegedly drafted by the ANC’s regional executive committee members, suggested officials “engage some of the comrades in the [uMgungundlovu] district as a water service authority with a view of controlling the supply of water”.
Six party members confirmed they know of the memo, the report said.
Mncwango claimed the ruling party was more interested in capturing state resources than looking after vulnerable communities.
“It is clear that the ANC would rather further inconvenience the poor, who are riddled with joblessness, rising food prices and the worst recorded drought in over a century, by depriving them of water before swooping in to ‘save the day’.”
ANC regional chairperson, Mthandeni Dlungwana, denied knowledge of the memo to the Sunday newspaper, and dismissed the allegations.
