MOZAMBIQUE: Journalists find more abandoned bodies in central Mozambique

Journalists have found more abandoned bodies in the central Mozambican bush.

This time the grisly discovery was made by Pierre Donadieu, a correspondent of the French News Agency, AFP. In a dispatch dated Wednesday he said there were at least nine corpses on the land of a local farmer, Donca Sabir, who said he had told the authorities, but nothing had been done.
“It has been two months since I found these bodies and no one has come to remove them,” Sabir told AFP. According to AFP, these corpses were dumped just 100 metres from the country’s main north-south highway (EN1).
Donadieu adds that this site is near the small bridge where other bodies were found in early May. This puts it in Macossa district, in Manica province.
Andre Catueira, a Mozambican journalist who strings for the Portuguese news agency Lusa, and for the independent weekly “Savana”, stumbled across these bodies and wrote about them on 1 May. His estimate was that, under the bridge and in a nearby field, there were 15 bodies.
A couple of days later these bodies were filmed by the independent television station, STV, which put the number of corpses at 13.
The police then buried the bodies, but claimed there were only 11. However, the police seem to have done an incomplete job since, according to AFP, “four skulls and some bones are still visible in the sand”.
On the grounds that the bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition, the police made no attempt to identify them. Since there were no autopsies, the exact causes of these deaths remain unknown.
AFP cites Mozambican journalist Zenaida Machado, who is now a researcher for the NGO Human Rights Watch, as saying “The Mozambican government must tell us who are these people, how they died and who left their bodies there. I find it difficult to understand how any investigation can be made without performing an autopsy on the bodies”.
