MOZAMBIQUE: Nyusi compares hidden debts to malaria: “Disinfecting the house, banishing the mosquitoes”

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi yesterday compared the undisclosed debts in Mozambique’s public accounts with malaria, saying that it was now necessary to “disinfect the house” and re-establish donor confidence.

At a joint press conference in Maputo with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President Nyusi said it was crucial to establish how the debt arose. He also noted that the government admitted there was a problem as soon as it discovered the situation.
“It’s like getting to a house and saying that there is malaria there,” Nyusi said.
Developing his analogy, the president said we must see if we missed “a mosquito net, if there are puddles out there or whether we must fumigate”.
“That is what we are doing now. After that we will fight,” he said, sitting next to the Portuguese president who, in the same press conference, confirmed the suspension of aid from the G14 international donor group, currently chaired by Portugal.
According to Nyusi, donors look at Mozambique as a house “unsafe for children because of the mosquitoes,” expressing his conviction that they would return soon.
“If we are disinfecting the house, banishing the mosquitoes and resuming a normal life, I don’t believe any donor country, any friendly country will want to incriminate Mozambique and sacrifice Mozambicans”.
