BURUNDI: Mayor says 'terrorists' behind deadly weekend attacks

The mayor of Burundi’s capital Bujumbura has pledged to apprehend the perpetrators of the attacks that killed at least three people and injured scores over the weekend.

According to reports, Mayor Freddy Mbonimpa, has blamed the spate of attacks on terrorists.

“These terrorists are trying to instill panic… we are in the process of breaking up these terrorist groups with the help of the local population,” Mbonimpa told AFP.

On Friday, eight people were injured in a grenade attack in the capital Bujumbura. On Saturday, two women were killed in a grenade attack and one person killed the next day.

Since president Pierre Nkurunziza announced his bid for a third term in office, more than 400 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands have fled to neighbouring countries.

Last week, the police indicated that 451 people have been killed since the start of the crisis, including 77 police officers and 374 civilians.
