PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu says people should not vote for him if they do not want. Speaking to journalists at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on arrival from Mozambique yesterday, President Lungu said people were free to vote for a leader of their choice.
President Lungu said he was proud to belong to a democratic country.
“So democracy means you can vote for me or you cannot; the choice is yours. You can vote for peace if you choose; it is a matter of choice. Others have chosen peace, that is why we are in power and they will still choose peace. People will choose where they want to go and people will choose which group of people they want to put in leadership. Democracy is not about fistfighting, beating people like Father Bwalya, no! I hope the police will stop at nothing to arrest those people,” President Lungu said.
He said the police should ensure that those behind the beating of Frank Bwalya were brought to book.
President Lungu said it was the same cadres who were appearing in court who attacked Bwalya.
“Who beat up Father Bwalya? UPND cadres, the same cadres who are appearing in court who beat up Moonga and others the other time but you are not talking to them. For me, I am more focused on the economy now, shortage of mealie-meal, corruption and smuggling of mealie-meal. They are the same big guys with big money, the same politicians who are fighting me who are smuggling mealie-meal, so these are the real issues for me. People should have food, people should be secure,” said President Lungu.
Bwalya was “beaten” by suspected UPND cadres at Sky FM in Monze on Friday.
A member of his media team said Bwalya was “beaten as he was leaving the radio station”, while one of the Sky FM employees said the suspected cadres ‘stormed the room where the interview was being conducted and beat up’ the PF deputy spokesperson.
