TRANSPARENCY International Zambia executive director Goodwell Lungu says the next president must not appoint corrupt leaders.
In an interview, Goodwell said President Edgar Lungu should demonstrate leadership by ensuring that people of questionable character are not given high positions in government.
“The weakness that we have seen not only in President Lungu but in other political party leaders is that he and others have been able to embrace people that have been cited for corruption. For the ruling party, which is the PF, they should demonstrate leadership in ensuring that people with questionable characters are not be given high positions in government. We want to appeal to the Republican President to show that he is in charge of the country by ensuring that he dismisses those controlling officers who have been perpetually cited in the Auditor General’s reports as not being accountable for public funds which they are supposed to safeguard,” Goodwell said.
He said whoever wins the August 11 elections should not embrace corrupt politicians.
Goodwell said Zambians should not vote for corrupt individuals this year.
He wondered why people that had been cited for corruption by the Auditor General and were under investigation were holding government positions.
“As Transparency International Zambia, we have observed that there are a lot of people who are corrupt who have been cited in the Auditor General’s report who have been reported to be under investigations and who society knows very well that these have engaged in corruption. So our plea to Zambians is that when they are given an opportunity on August 11, their consideration should be on the basis of the integrity of these particular individuals,” Goodwell said.
He said embracing corruption had become a societal problem and leaders should be seen to walk the talk.
Goodwell said both the ruling and opposition parties praise corrupt individuals when they join their rank and file.
He said this was an indication of shortfall of integrity that needed to be addressed.
Goodwell said Zambians would reap corruption if they voted for a corrupt leadership.
“Our take is that if they [voters] opt to elect for corrupt individuals then they are going to reap corrupt benefits because a corrupt individual’s focus will be to amass wealth on their own behalf and on behalf of their sponsors,” said Goodwell.
